Overriding a property's details is helpful when you want to customize the property for a specific event or property group, but you do not want to update the original version or create an entirely new event property.
The properties table in Amplitude Data displays each property's original version, which can be shared across multiple events and property groups. If you change the details of a property, those changes will also apply to all events and property groups that share them. But when you override a property on an event or property group instead, any changes you make to the property will only apply to that specific event or property group.
To override a property on a specific event, follow these steps:
- Click the Events tab in the left navigation to open the events table. Then click the name of the event you're interested in.
- In the event's details panel, navigate to Details > Properties, and click the property you want to override.
- In the event property details panel, click Override (on the right side of the blue box). A message confirming that any changes to the property will apply only to that event will appear.
To override a property on a property group, follow these steps:
- Click the Properties tab in the left navigation. Then open the Event Properties tab to view the event properties table.
- Click Property Groups to switch to the property groups table view. Then click on the name of the property group you're interested in.
- In the property details panel, navigate to Details > Properties, and click the property you want to override.
- In the event property details panel, click Override (on the right side of that blue box).
NOTE: Any changes to a property that is overridden on a property group will apply to all events that use that property group.
Revert overrides
Reverting an override to its original version is a quick way to clean up your tracking plan and maintain consistency across your event properties. When you override an event property, its details will update to match the latest state of the original version listed in the event properties table. Once reverted, any changes to the property will also apply to any events or property groups that use the original version of that property.
NOTE: To see what will change when you revert an override before actually doing it, select Compare To Original. The original values will appear in yellow boxes under any overridden details. Turn off the comparison view by clicking Manage Override and selecting Hide Comparison.
To revert an overridden property on a specific event, follow these steps:
- Click the Events tab in the left navigation to open the Events table. Then click the name of the event you're interested in.
- In the event details panel, navigate to Details > Properties. Then click the event property you want to revert.
- In the event property details panel, click Manage Override (on the right side of the blue box).
- From the dropdown menu that opens, select Revert To Original.
To revert an event property on a property group, follow these steps:
- Click the Properties tab in the left navigation. Then click the Event Properties tab to open the event properties table.
- Click Property Groups to switch to the property groups table. Then click the name of the property group you're interested in.
- In the property group details panel, navigate to Details > Properties, and click the property you want to revert.
- In the event property details panel that opens, click Manage Override (on the right side of the blue box).
- From the dropdown menu that opens, select Revert To Original.
To review and revert any overrides for a specific property, follow these steps:
- Click the Properties tab in the left navigation. Then click the Event Properties tab to open the event properties table.
- Click the name of the property you're interested in.
- In the event property details panel, open the Used In tab. All events or property groups using an overridden version of that event property should be clearly marked.
- Hover over any of these event or property group rows and click on the three-dot icon on the right.
- Select Revert To Original.
Bulk revert your overrides
You can revert multiple overrides at once. To do so, follow these steps:
- Open the Used In tab in the event property details panel.
- If any properties have been overridden, click the Manage button next to the Overrides field. A modal will appear where you can review and bulk revert all overrides.
Notes
- Event rows that include “via property group…” use a property group that includes this event property. Reverting the property on any one of those events will revert the property on all of them.
- When you add an unexpected event property to your tracking plan that shares the same name as an event property that already exists there, it will be marked as overridden. If you would like the event property to share the same details as the original version, revert the event property.
